We need to ensure renters remain protected

I am running for MPP to be a strong voice for our community, including a strong voice for renters.

Growing up in Toronto-St. Paul's, I have seen change in our city over the years. Our neighbourhoods have grown, and the population has increased. The cost of living in our city has gone up.

I am running for MPP to be a strong voice for our community, including a strong voice for renters.

Ontario's Liberal government has expanded rent control to all private units in Ontario. This protects renters from sudden, dramatic rent increases.

Our government implemented these measures last year after hearing from people across the province about the impacts of unfair rent increases. Now, our Fair Housing Plan protects 250,000 renters who weren't covered under the previous rent control legislation.

Doug Ford has made in clear he is not interested in protecting tenants. When pressed directly about his thoughts on rent control, Ford said, “I just don’t like it. I like having the market dictate.”

Ford’s plan to scrap rent controls could lead to rents rising as high as 30%, 50% or even higher, leaving tenants in difficult and unpredictable circumstances.

We need to make sure that hardworking renters in our community are protected. As your MPP, I will continue to advocate for the interests of tenants.
